Historical quarter

This part of town concentrates most of the constructions that made it worthy of being declared an Asset of Cultural interest in 2004, under the historical complex category.

Along these magnificent streets one can find a variety of architectural styles. Among the humble abodes of craftsmen and sailors there are also lofty houses, telling the story of a flourishing town (Indiano houses, banks, the residences of shipowner families...).

Some stand-outs are the old customs house (18th c.), San Damián castle (18th c.), O Cargadoiro (20th c.), and Plaza del Campo/Plaza de España, the beating heart of the town, around which stand the elegant neoclassical pazo Ibáñez, the cosmopolitan Torre de los Moreno, the sober Santa Clara monastery, and the parish church of Santa María del Campo, formerly a 13th century Franciscan monastery.

The place where the streets Vilafranca do Bierzo, San Roque, and Clemente Martínez meet is one of the most unique corners of the historical quarter. Many Indiano-influenced bourgeoise residences from the late 19th-early 20th century can be seen here.

This environment can be enjoyed if you follow one of the routes detailed on this site, such as the Urban Indiano route, which covers some of the historical quarter's landmarks.

Ribadeo's historical quarter is a great place for a day of shopping.  You can browse the town's stores as you stroll through its unique streets. Also, it is a great place for a tapas crawl and for enjoying the gastronomy of Ribadeo.
