Things to do

7. Acera derecha de la calle San Roque

Casa de la Ayudantía

Casa de la Ayudantía

[at number 12]
This building was commissioned in 1886 by Francisco López García, and bears the name House of the Assistantship because it used to belong to the Command of the Navy. Although it was conceived as a single-family residence, it was split into three units. On the bottom floor there are two remarkable cast-iron columns supporting the stone base of the balcony above, which boasts fine grillwork and wooden doors framed by a stark moulding. On each side there are metal verandas. This building displays the strength of iron as a decorative solution as well as the art of ironwork, competing against woodwork.

Doña Esperanza Leiras´ estate

Doña Esperanza Leiras´ estate

[en el número 14]
Esperanza Leiras y López commissioned the construction of this estate in 1886. Two key features of the Indiano architecture are present in the building: a porch which extends and guards the main entrance (a common element in this kind of house) and the gurugú, a glazed balcony protruding from the rooftop, a favourite of local merchants in the 18th and 19th centuries.

Doña Ascensión Pillado´s estate

[at number 16]
Ascensión Pillado y Pedrosa funded this construction in 1888. The façade bears a resemblance to the urban pazos in the old town and, not unlike them, it was inspired by traditional Galician architecture: playful symmetry in windows and balconies, frames of stonework of granite, finely carved ledges, and the presence of the so-called “air doors” (a kind of Juliet balcony). Nevertheless, the elegant, intricate ironwork is proof that the owner was acquainted with the art trends of the time.

Casa de los Andés

[at number 18]
This is a prime example of eclectic architecture, where elements taken from different styles come together. It was built in 1920. The most remarkable element of this elegant estate is the use of wrought iron and glass, which complement each other to create two balconies and an arcade, among other things.
