Hórreos

Hórreos

These granaries have a variety of names (hórreo, cabazo, granero, or espigueiro) and are one of the pinnacles of popular Galician architecture.

They were raised from the ground to keep the grain safe from mice and moisture.

Openings in the walls allowed the air to blow through, providing the ventilation needed to preserve wheat, corn, etc.

The hórreos in Ribadeo can roughly be divided into two types: those with stone walls, and those with wooden sides.
