Things to do

1.The Indiano footprint

Prologue

Barrio de San Roque

In the last few decades of the 19th century, as well as in the early 20th century, Ribadeo lived a time of economic and social growth, a development that also changed the urban landscape. This was made possible thanks to the immigrants who returned from America -the “Indianos”-, many of whom had amassed fortunes. These wealthy returnees invested in industry and trade, and also fostered many social and cultural initiatives. Their actions were the key contribution to the structural modernization of the town.

The Indianos used their wealth to co-finance the water conveyance project, the construction of the market building, and the graveyard; as well as urban spaces such as the park across Town Hall. Moreover, they invested in education, and donated money for the building of schools, such as the one in Rinlo and the agricultural school Pedro Murias.

The Indianos, of course, also built homes for themselves. The style chosen for these villas is a striking combination of American and European sensibilities, as well as architectural trends from both sides of the Atlantic.

The villas of these wealthy returnees have since been a beacon of the success and cultural advance of the owners, and by extension, those of the townsfolk.

The so-called Indiano architecture is mainly characterized by its preference for comfortable, open dwellings -a nice break from the then-prevalent “haven” houses-, and employed cutting-edge materials for the time. These sofisticated villas represent a change in the way community living was understood and brought about a transformation in both rural and urban landscapes.

In contrast with traditional houses, the Indiano villas distinguished themselves by their height and design, boasting ornate façades and large, exuberant gardens. In these gardens, the owners showcased the wealth and beauty of tropical flora; with palm trees being a common plant in their haciendas.

Ribadeo is the Galician municipality with the highest concentration of Indiano houses. The route we are describing has two itineraries, one is urban and the other will lead you through the parishes. It is not possible for the visitor to view the entirety of the regional Indiano arquitecture on this route, but they will be able to behold the most significant examples of it. These masterpieces are not only a feast for the eyes, they also tell the story of the people who fostered a transformation in the spirit and economy of Ribadeo's society, as well as those of the surrounding regions.
